(GMO)- Genetic Modification of Plants is a process that involves the deliberate insertion of genes from bacteria, animals or other organisms into the DNA of plants. These type of manipulations would never occur in nature alone. The purpose of this process is to increase yield of successful crops, delay fruit ripening, resist insect/virus/ herbicides, alter oil content, and/or to control pollen with much of this process happening in North America.
Many dietary supplements are manufactured from both organic and inorganic sources, which can often involve the usage of some sort of genetically engineered product in the manufacturing process. (I.E: some components can be extracted from crops that had been genetically engineered prior to harvest in order to “enhance” them by increasing their herbicide resistance, and overall quality by augmenting key ingredients concentrations).
Non-GMO products are known as those that guarantee an all organic product, meaning that no genetic engineering techniques were applied to the materials whatsoever, but some cross contamination could have occurred during transportation and distribution as particles, pollen, traces of other potential GMO products found in the air and environment could travel around with them. GMO-free products guarantee 100% GMO-free merchandise, ensuring that there was no contamination of any kind to the original non-GMO product during transportation to retailers and food markets.
The main difference between non-GMO and GMO-free product resides in the guarantee offered by the producer on whether the product contains any kind of GMO trace element or not. Some companies are especially concerned with product branding of this type, and they often make sure that their labeling is coherent with the claims they make about their product as guaranteed GMO-free.
